15 March 2026 | ESAPN leads regional mobilization for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026

As the global community prepares for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) 2026, ESAPN is at the forefront of regional mobilization efforts. The network recently supported delegates to attend the global launch of the IYRP at the FAO in Rome, ensuring that the specific priorities of Eastern and Southern African pastoralists are reflected in the international agenda. This upcoming year represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to raise global awareness about the importance of rangelands and the people who steward them.

In preparation for 2026, ESAPN has outlined a series of strategic regional activities. These include the African Pastoralist Gathering scheduled for January 2026 in Nairobi, and the African Women and Youth Gathering in Kampala in March 2026. These events are designed to consolidate pastoralist voices and build momentum for the IYRP. The network’s goal is to use this platform to advocate for significant policy shifts that protect rangelands and support pastoral livelihoods. By mobilizing members and partners across the region, ESAPN is ensuring that IYRP 2026 is not just a celebration but a catalyst for real, systemic change that improves the lives of pastoralists and the health of the ecosystems they depend on.
