The Eastern and Southern Africa Pastoralist Network (ESAPN), in collaboration with PINGOs Forum, the Tanzania Natural Resource Forum (TNRF), Pastoral Livelihood Support & Empowerment Programme (PALSEP), with funding support of the European Union through the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) through the PLACE Programme, convened a high-level engagement with the TZ-PPG in Dodoma on 29th April 2026. The engagement brought together Members of Parliament, government representatives, civil society organizations, and development partners to strengthen political commitment to advancing pastoralist-friendly laws, policies, and investments. Discussions focused on communal land tenure, livestock mobility corridors, climate resilience, cross-border cooperation, and increasing public investment in pastoral economies to improve livelihoods and sustainable natural resource management.
The engagement resulted in a strong commitment by Members of Parliament to champion reforms that address outdated legal frameworks, protect grazing lands, improve access to justice, strengthen climate-resilient pastoral systems, and promote peaceful coexistence between pastoralists and farming communities. Participants also revitalized the TZ-PPG by electing interim leadership to coordinate advocacy and engagement with government institutions and stakeholders. The meeting reinforced the importance of sustained collaboration among Parliament, civil society, development partners, and pastoralist communities to advance inclusive, evidence-based policies that recognize pastoralism as a vital contributor to Tanzania’s economy, food security, and resilience.
