In June 2025, ESAPN participated in the “Regional Conference on the International Year of Camelids (IYC) 2024: Harnessing the Potential of Camelids in the Face of Climate Change,” hosted in Nairobi, Kenya. This event provided a vital platform for the network to emphasize the indispensable role that camelids play in the livelihoods of pastoralists inhabiting arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). As the world grapples with escalating climate shocks, camelids—including camels, llamas, and alpacas emerge as key assets for climate-resilient livestock systems due to their unique physiological adaptations.
During the conference, ESAPN advocated for increased investment and policy recognition of the camelid sector. The network highlighted that transforming the livestock sector requires a profound appreciation for indigenous knowledge and the cultural significance of these animals. Beyond their economic value, camelids are central to the food security and social fabric of many ESAPN member communities. The network’s participation aimed to ensure that regional policies support the sustainable management of camelids and the protection of the rangelands they inhabit. By aligning with the global IYC 2024 initiative, ESAPN is pushing for a livestock transformation that is inclusive of all species and production systems, ensuring that pastoralists have the resources and policy backing needed to adapt to a changing environment while maintaining their traditional way of life.
